Shore Poets APRIL: Open Night, Jane McKie + Kirsty Law

Once again, it’s our Open Night!

Sunday 30 April 2017
7pm (doors open at 630pm or a bit later, depending on prior events in the space)
Oh! Outhouse, 12a Broughton Street Lane, Edinburgh, EH1 3LY
Admission: £5 (concessions £3)
Please be there in plenty of time to get a seat. Unfortunately, fire regulations mean we have to turn people away if the room becomes overcrowded.

Yes, it’s our annual Open Night, where much of the event is handed over to up-and-coming poets. The signup period has closed, and we’ll be drawing names out of our collective poetry hats (they’re ever so stylish) and contacting everyone in due course. (If you have any questions or need to snatch your name back out of the hat, please contact us at shorepoetsedinburgh @

Shore Poet: JANE MCKIE

Last month, Jane McKie won the Magma Poetry Prize (judged by Jane Draycott), so if we’re very lucky she’ll read her prize-winning poem for us! She also won the 2011 Edwin Morgan International Poetry Competition. Jane’s first collection, Morocco Rococo (Cinnamon Press), was awarded the 2008 Sundial/Scottish Arts Council prize for best first book of 2007. Other publications include When the Sun Turns Green (Polygon, 2009), Garden of Bedsteads (Mariscat, 2011) which was a Poetry Book Society pamphlet choice, and Kitsune (Cinnamon Press, 2015). She’s a lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Edinburgh.

Borders-born Kirsty Law grew up learning traditional songs, mainly in the Scots dialect. She now combines this with her strong interests in songwriting and poetry which has lead to exciting collaboration and her own self penned work, inspired by the ideas and forms she finds within the tradition. She has now launched into a career of performing and writing, fast becoming noticed as a talent to watch.

The lemon cake raffle provides us with much-needed funds, so we very much appreciate your support. And it is a most excellent lemon cake. (Occasionally, we also have books or CDs in the raffle, and are very grateful to the donors thereof.)

We will not have a wildcard spot this month.

We hope to see you on 30th April!

Useful information:

1) we have a mailing list, and if you haven’t signed up yet, here’s your chance: just click right here and fill in the few bits of information. This is likely only going to be for event notifications and things like ‘looking for slam/open night participants’.

2) we have a new email address; the old one will not forward anything to the new one, though there should be an auto-reply. That new address (take out spaces on either side of the @) is: shorepoetsedinburgh @

3) Dates for your diary: the final Shore Poets events of the 2016-17 season will be 28 May and 25 June 2017.

I write. I do other things, of course, but here is where I discuss writing (mostly).
